Well not really my wedding and neither is it my first wedding I attended but its much more than that. A few weeks ago I was able to attend my cousins wedding in Cooch Behar, a full blown Bengali wedding and the first memorable Bengali wedding I have attended. I was initially skeptical about going as I didn't know if I would enjoy a five day trip to the unknown and the wedding itself but I have one of the most memorable times of my life.
To keep it short, it as as Bengali as it can get! 5 days of full blown live bands to give you a migraine, and the other usual things that go with the Bong culture....... Laughing, crying, family drama, fights among aunts one minute and the next minute they are laughing, good food, bad food, drinking, not drinking, sleepless nights and of course the few who get sick at every occasion.
So many of us flew there from Cal and to keep things short, we took a 1 hour flight and 5 hours by car but an overall 10 hours trip. I think it would have been faster to go by train. You gotta love the Bengali planning. And once we get there, first night was fun and interesting like every night and wish I had more time to tell but I want to keep this short.
So I had the honor of spending the night with my cousin and his wife. By culture a few friends and family spend the night of the wedding with the couple so since I was the token non attendant at other weddings I had the privilege of completing my functions for this one. It was fun, and the room my other cousin I shared sank of the bathroom and we had mosquitoes the size of cockroaches to keep us company. Of course we had to get that room. So no sleep that night, went to the room at 3 am and by 6 am I was ready to come back to the hotel. those who know me, know I have a certain germ issue but what the hell, its once in a lifetime experience right.
Oh did I forget to mention, the first day, my cousin and I on our first trip to the brides house, were complemented on being such a nice couple. We almost chocked on water, but I had to get used to it. For the next few days, either I was asked about my wife or I was being set my for my wedding, or even people planning my wedding...... God the drama, you gotta love it. Most of all I didn't know most people but didn't care since I was there to have fun.
Third and forth day was sight seeing and some more wedding and reception stuff and 5 day was the trip back.
Well I will explain some of the sights and things I saw in-between, in the next few posts. Two more weddings to go, new years and Christmas in the middle and an engagement party and January will be over before I know it!
